Future Cities is a program that stresses the idea of making the world a better place. Students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. Each year the students are presented with a problem and create a city to showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. The students submit a scale model built using recycled materials and a project plan. Models are presented and students experience a question-and-answer session with the judges.
Holy Rosary has participated continuously since 2019 earning recognitions each year. Regional winners represent their region at the international finals. Students who participate in Future Cities use the Engineering Design Process. Students apply Science and Math concepts to current real-world issues. They learn how communities work and how to become better citizens when they develop solutions to problems that their communities face. Writing and speaking skills are further developed to impact their presentations During this process, the students practice time management skills.
Every spring, the Catholic War Veterans Post 1182 sponsors its annual spelling bee. This contest has been in existence for over 40 years! Our 8th graders participate in an old-fashioned spell down to qualify for the contest. The spell down culminates with two winners who have the honor of representing Holy Rosary in the annual bee. Our two student representatives have one month to review the special word list provided by the Catholic War Veterans before competing in the competition. Holy Rosary has been fortunate to have back-to-back first place winners for the past two years, and a third place winner the year prior.
